Davy Crookett is half legend-half history, so is another hero made to order for Shapiro. Legend, folk lore, history and story are blended in a biography of his youth, a book of charm and originality, with descriptive passages that have a lyrical quality. This should be good story telling material and lead to wider reading of that period of our history. From the moment Davy leaps from his cradle to demand"" a swig of kerosene oil to loosen up his pipes"" until he sets out for Texas, he proves his claim to be ""a hunter and meant for to roam. I can lick my weight in wildcats"". He was gentle with the woods folks he loves; he knew their ways. He lived to prove his own motto:- ""I make sure I'm right. Then I go ahead"".
