CASEY JONES AND LOCOMOTIVE #638

I liked this perhaps the best of these original American folk tales which Irwin Shapiro has been adding to the shelves of legends in the building. He has a subtle undercurrent of humor which children get readily; he spins a yarn with the best of them. The story here told is off the beaten track, for he adds an episode to Casey Jones' fabled career which will appeal enormously to small boys, for he tells how he almost lost his chance to drive Locomotive #638 because he would not give up baseball at the behest of the railroad superintendent. The story has a happier ending than the familiar ballad ending.
