Readers of the New Yorker will find some of these familiar. They are in the modern tradition, terse, hard, with left-wing implications. Many are brutal; some deal with professional sport thugs; a few are out of the proletarian vein, and there are two nice small boy tales. The collection is uneven, but most of them, whether you like them or not, get under the skin.
