THE LITTLE CANDLE'S BEAM

A story of so-called mother love, and a revelation of the dangers of the maternal instinct when it becomes too possessive, too all-devouring. The period is Washington at the time of the bonus marchers and the central character is a weak and silly woman, left a widow with a small son, and determined to make her life a dedication to him. In so doing, she manages not only to alienate the boy, but to compromise with life itself. Essentially a woman's book.
