The magic of Ogden Nash's tricks with words has not been passed on to his daughter in this book for small children. There is too much rhyme and neither enough reason nor nonsense to the substance of a story of a small child, assigned by her mother to answer all bells and take messages while Mother is down cellar. But to Nell, this means inviting everyone in, - the postman, the ice-cream man, the organ grinder and so on, until Father arrives and finds a party under way. Even the Leonard Weisgard pictures lack the charm he ordinarily exercises.
