Kentucky at the close of the eighteenth century is the scene of this story involving a postman, his donkey and a lively backwoods family. Of all the Duncan children, Dolly, a twelve-year-old, is the favorite of Mark the postman. The girl and Pet, his donkey, fill his life with affection. But when Pet is stolen and Dolly's life put in danger, the peaceful postman and the homeloving Duncans show the degree of their stamina by apprehending a group of dangerous bandits who plague the remote Kentucky settlement. A simple story, told with affection, this introduces the reader to an atmosphere rarely treated in full length books at the eight to eleven age level. A tale of gentle people at a time of particular stress.
