I had looked forward tremendously to this biography of Robert Louis Stevenson and am frankly disappointed. Perhaps it would not have been possible to tell a conventionally consecutive story of his not too eventual life, but the episodic treatment, with the too obvious effort to tie up the periods kf his life to familiar verses from his poetry gives it a flavor that would be distasteful to the average boy and girl reader. The facts are there; there is much of interest; but the handling stresses his somewhat esoteric approach to life from boyhood and makes him a less likeable and human person than might have been possible.
