It is roughly a quarter of a century since Gesell patterned child development and Spock liberalized the ground rules of child care. Since that time, very little new thought has been brought to the bringing up of parents on bringing up children, and Hymes is not the man to reverse this decision. This successor to Understanding Your Child which appeared ten years ago is an abecedarian approach to accepted attitudes on loving and disciplining (variously) your child, training him and teaching him, coping with tantrums- jealousy- fears- times of separation, introducing him to school and sex, etc., etc. There are further suggested readings (chiefly pamphlet materials) and key questions at the end of each chapter. Par for the Parents Magazine audience- no higher.
