LIFE ON AN ICE FLOE

Here in diary form is a record of 274 days on an ice floe, when the four Soviet scientists made this expedition to record hydrological observations. Possibly scientists would find the record interesting. Certainly the layman would not. Nothing happens -- no ordeals -- no adventure -- no perils. They are plentifully supplied with food, tents, etc. The log consists of routine data, plus a bit of propaganda. When fissures in the ice made return advisable, they radioed home. The cause of ice movements seems to be the chief discovery intelligible to the layman. Incredibly dull.
