A timely book tracing the development of the liberal tradition in America. Beginning with the thesis that the USA has been from the beginning a liberal enterprise, the author traces the development of liberalism from the administration of Washington to the present day. The philosophy defined as liberalism of one era does not conform to that of another. Washington's doctrine of national unity and sovereignty, perfect for his day, when measured on the slide rule of time has almost reversed itself. The author contends that liberalism in our age calls for national unity within the frame of world unity, and points out that national sovereignty must be abrogated in such a degree as to make it harmonious and not retardive to a greater sovereignty of a world of nations. The appendix is meaty, well organized and a mine of information to the market for this book-students, speakers, teachers.
