KIRKUS REVIEW

Of particular regional value, Prof. Squires has made the history of New Hampshire into an easily absorbed story that could be enjoyed at the adult level, too. From the time of the first settlers to the Revolution, the author concentrates on details of New Hampshire frontier living. He goes on to the changing economy of the state from the days of an agrarian society through the Industrial Revolution to the present and the uncertain future. The leading citizens throughout New Hampshire's history, and the progress of public education, as well as the progress it brought, are well-described. The state's outstanding contributions to all of the American wars should prove to be of particular interest. Rewarding reading for New England students and browsers. An appendix lists the State Parks.
