Prehistoric Japan offers the same sort of archelogical fascination that Egypt and the Near East do -- Far Eastern historians have also had to dig and guess and find their clues to the past through ancient writings. This book is handily organized into chapters which deal with the hunting society of the Paleolithic Period; the sea supported communities of the Neolithic Period; and the development of agricultural techniques and economy in the Bronze Age. Japanese legend has been a great source of information and inspiration to archeologists and Japanese mythology gets a very clear chapter to itself. The last chapter surveys the finds of the Tomb Period and it is most closely comparable to the Egyptian tomb burials with which most readers are familiar.
