The intolerance of the Puritan fathers is central to the theme of this novel in which Glory, a Quaker girl and John, a young minister, asistant to Increase Mather, find nonconformity their sin. Convinced of good points in the Quaker faith, John is accused of witchcraft when he defends it. He is sentenced but his escape brings him and Glory together and their story is one that records the facts of the times and the tensions of emotion running high.
