The California crimes here collected are re-told and examined by members of the Mystery Writers of America and there is an introductory run-through of others in which the editor adds further notes to this state's criminous history. David Magee goes back to 1880 for the shooting of a dentist by a vengeful husband; Lenore Glen Offord surveys the case of Bessie Ferguson (no body) and her rich ""uncles""; McComas reviews the kidnap-murder of a 12 year old by that ""nice young man"" William Hickman; Stuart Palmer follows Bessie Graham's trial for the murder of an old lady; Jean Muir considers the absurdities that were revealed in the killing of a 72 year old widow; other contributors are Theodore Orchards, M. D. Shipley, Miriam de Ford. Tantalizing cases, carefully studied, with definite peculiarities, make this a good workbook for dedicated fact fanciers of criminal cases.
