This is virtually a world history in terms of the place of science in world affairs, and the general identification of interests of science and society. The author has studied the roles of freedom, of class interest of national ambition, of manual labor and other social influences in development of science, and has shown how science has been a determining factor in the destiny of mankind. Though there is no attempt to go into the details of the role science is playing in the war today, there is implicit in much of the modern material -- and the future forecast -- recognition of that element.
