MY STRENGTH AND SHIELD

The minister of St. John's, Shandon, Columbia, S.C., offers here a cycle of thirty morning and evening meditations, based upon the collects of the Book of Common Prayer. The plural pronoun of the collects have been changed to the first person singular, but the author suggests that the meditations might be used for services of worship or in small prayer groups, in which case the plural would be restored. The connection between the collect and the meditation is not clear in every case. The meditations are sometimes flawed by the use of contemporary jargon, and the contrast with the classic phrasing of the collects is not always fortunate. Each meditation concludes with an appropriate verse from the Bible.
