A vastly forgettable romantification of the early years of radio broadcasting, from ""UBC's"" first stations in Providence and Atlanta to its giant nationwide hookup and immensely popular programs including ""Ogden Wilde's"" frightening Halloween night scare show about the invasion of earth by the Venusians. With banality. The story tells of the rise of salesman David Abrams and ""genius"" engineer Bernie Straus, who may well have real life counterparts but no life on the printed page. To be sure, every famous entertainer in radio history, and every jingle and commercial up to 1948's television takeover, is invoked for instant nostalgia. David has a career-long love for songstress Ellen Curry who marries homosexual executive Gordon Strong who gets murdered in bed and -- O the trials of Helen Trent! -- all ends bittersweet with the lovers still separated on the Plaza steps and -- That's all until tomorrow!
