LABOR UNIONS IN ACTION by Jack Barbash

LABOR UNIONS IN ACTION

The author frankly acknowledges his perspective as that of the union spokesman ""who describes and interprets his own behaviour"". In spite of this, he succeeds in being objective and dispassionate. He traces the early history of union organization, structure, method of administration, the purpose and technique of collective bargaining. He shows how the CIO political program has forced the AF of L into politics. His chapter on union activities in education, research, public relations, international affairs, health and insurance benefits is one of the best in the book. Perhaps most important at the moment is the chapter on communism in unions; it is an eye-opener and clarifies the struggle unions are having in clearing out ""borers from within"". A helpful book.
