Career cum adventure cum romance in a stock summer stock story. Neophyte Mary Donovan comes to Graniteport, a New England sea coast town, and it's not too long before she becomes one of the actresses at the Mermaid Theatre. Her attempts to keep her background secret rouse the interest of Tom Bradford, a publicity agent with a yen for set designing- and her abilities on the stage, the jealousy of Tina Martina, leading lady and pure hitch. Tina's attempts to oust Mary, which go to such lengths as letting a cat on stage in a crucial moment, fail. Tom's attempts to switch from publicity to scenery and to win Mary, succeed, for Mary's uncle turns out to be the famous and helpful set designer Cecil Bannister, Mary turns out to be a wonderful actress and Broadway's the next stop for everyone. A quick trip to the bright lights.
