The author of last year's notable Jamie has done it again -- a short, penetrating novel which captures the essence of an ethic while it reveals the human condition in South Africa. Pillay, a deep sea fisherman in his 60's owns his own boat. At the insistence of his arrogant young passenger, Farraday Koenig, pre-university student and rich man's son, Pillay took The Poor Man's Friend far off the coast of South Africa. The motor failed and bad weather arrived almost simultaneously. Survival depended on the sort of mutual dependence Pillay never expected to share with a white -- which young Koenig was not prepared to share with a black. Dealing in strong emotion which never becomes mere sentiment, this is a thoroughly masculine, meaningful action/adventure.
