DANCE SCENE: U.S.A.

Clive Barnes in his text lauds the dance scene, U.S.A., for its wonderful variety (from happenings to Swan Lake) and the coexistence here of modern dance and classical ballet. These he thinks account for a supremacy which gives American dance ""possibly more position and respect in the outside world than the entire operation of General Motors."" He ticks off choreographers (Balanchine--""lean, athletic, exploratory,"" Gene Tetley--a representative of the interaction between modern and classic), companies (from Cunningham to New York City Ballet), and so conveys a sense of dance here and now, today, in these United States.
