THE LIONS OF LIVING FREE

Film director Couffer (notably Ring of Bright Water) highpoints his experiences with lions, actors, trainers, and natives in filming Living Free, another Kenyan film to be released about publication time. Couffer discusses lion-and-cub procurement (mainly from private stock), training, and adjustment to terrain and personnel. There is an inside -- and quite fascinating though brief -- report on how cub movement and facial expressions are achieved for the camera; anecdotes involving the Masai natives, whom Couffer admires; and the story of a tragic lion hunt. With photographs of lions couchant and majestically rampant, this has predetermined Elsa appeal.
