THE EXPENDABLE SPY by Jack D. Hunter

THE EXPENDABLE SPY

By

Publisher: Dutton

Disenchanted spies operating on insufficient funds and meeting with double-double-crosses often meet a funeral in Berlin when they come in out of the cold. Hunter's spy is Peter Klaussen working with American Intelligence in Munich in 1945. Though Klaussen doesn't know it, he is simply an expendable pawn, selected as a mediocre man. The intention: to penetrate the Soviet spy system via a Nazi group of triple agents (they Work for three governments, but really, for themselves). Klaussen however rapidly becomes so successful that he winds up killing good guys, good-bad guys, bad-bad guys wholesale. The novel,'s theme is that undercover work is most successful when most immoral. Its resolution is overly melodramatic but most of the tale is Spellbinding, and the Burtonian dialogue is waspish good fun.
