Of particular interest to fight fans, this honest, though surface, biography of an ex-champion. The details of his early years, poverty, mining, ditch digging -- sustained by an ambition to be a champion and to have wealth, these are more interesting than the record of the years following his win over Willard in 1919. Constant fighting and no progress until Kerns took him in hand; how his first year as champion brought him only embarrassment and unhappiness; he learned to achieve popularity. His estimate of himself is modest, his tributes to the men he fought are sportsmanlike. There is a glossing over of the personal side, -- the break with Kerns, his marriages and divorces, but there is a lot about prize fighting and the technicalities of his career. Plus sale for older boys interested in the fighting game. Sporting circle market chiefly.
