A long, leisurely novel that is interesting and written with sympathy and understanding. It pleads the case of the Welsh coal miners, but shows that in spite of abject poverty, they get a great deal out of life. The story of a family, victims of the mines, and of Moriah and Megan who work in the brickyards, and of what happens when an unexpected legacy makes release possible. Woven into the story is a good deal of the history of the times, -- strikes, housing conditions, religious battles. A large canvas skilfully handled. A solid, mature piece of work.
