THE CHRISTMAS PINATA

A cracked, discarded and unabashedly sentient pot (""If it had a heart, that would be broken too"") becomes, proudly, both beautiful and useful when it is made into the Gomez family's Christmas pinata. And when, much later, its broken bits are joined on the scrap pile by the pieces of the decorated pot the poor one always envied, the shards of both agree that ""We began the same and we ended the same. . . . And in between we were each useful in our own way. . . . Everybody is."" No doubt The Christmas Pinata will also serve--as a jaunty answer to those annual requests for material on other Christmas customs.
