Jack Kent's vernacular retelling of five popular fairy tales, with two or three cartoon illustrations to an oversized page, is about as close as we want to get to Saturday morning TV. ""I'll never rest as long as that brat lives,"" says Snow White's stepmother, who ends up with seven years' bad luck after smashing her oracular mirror. Of course, when faced with the members of Sleeping Beauty's dormant household all draped with cobwebs, or, better yet, the heroine of Beauty and the Beast going through the last act in hair curlers, we have to admit that Kent has a talent for this sort of lowbrow comedy.
