A CONCISE DICTIONARY OF MUSIC

By

Publisher: Dodd, Mead

Concise is the operative word in these brief passages from the A to Zither of music. They cover musical forms, elements, notations, instruments, composers (the latter with capsule biography and notes on the nature and number of compositions). Works themselves are not separately listed or analyzed, a feature of The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Music by Percy Scholes (a revised edition appeared in 1964), which also has a more historical-musicological (and British) orientation. Basic, accessible information, but lacking the scope and some of the authority of the Oxford book.
