YOUNG BRAZIL: Children of Brazil at work and at play

Rightly noting that there are no ""typical"" Brazilians, Mr. Manning puts them all on display--Indians, Negroes, whites, Orientals and various admixtures; rich and poor, urban and rural, and more mixtures. Discontinuous and repetitive, the book does make a few points (the paucity of schooling, the expectation that children will work in and out of the home) but overall the reader simply arrives where the author began: the assertion of diversity is substantiated. Whereas others on Brazil concentrate on one culture, or one at a time, to exhibit a coherent representative way of life.
