And a roundup of short stories of the west which in their verbatim realism of place and character, in their dramatic precision and occasional humor, repeat the superiority of his earlier Shine. There's the grim revenge of stern Rodock against the men who had brutalized his mares; the iron will of Kittura Remsberg and the mirror she takes with her in her exodus westward the only suggestion of her weakness; the feud between two Ozark families which ends at the graveside of a boy; the faulty arithmetic of Cooter James, which adds up to a wife; the correspondence courtship which ends in a reluctant marriage; the boy who goes amok through his father's driving sense of sin; etc. A collection, which lends a real distinction to this medium.
