THE WIRE GOD

The taped record on George McCord, wire service but no gentleman of the press, provides a story of success achieved behind the backs and over the heads of the men for whom he worked. Leaving home (French Point Texas) for a starting job in Austin, George flubs his first releases as a reporter but gets the most out of a local emergency during which his superior kills himself. Taken to Kansas City by Kerns, George is the first to cut him out with his wife- and with the New York office, as Kerns' plan for a radio hookup secures George's transfer there. Marriage for money proves an attractive proposition; the war promotes his own interests further; and when his past catches up with him, and he is to be fired, the president dies of a heart attack and George stays on- on top.... The huckster-heel provides a recognizable, reminiscent figure, some tightrope situations, and a certain energy rather than any excitement.
