In a handsome, oversize (9 «"" x 12 «"") edition, a graceful translation of a favorite tale--together with illustrations notable for their luminous quality and unusual appeal. Distant, romantically craggy peaks form a backdrop for Schroeder's serene fairy-tale kingdom--where trees are either perfectly stylized or grotesquely alive; where tiny, distant figures seem preserved in time. Creative use of various devices adds visual interest: the petulant, dainty princess and the slim, persistent frog are sometimes shown several times across a single double spread as the action advances; the text space is incorporated into illustrations in many unusual, mostly successful ways, including having it almost disappear when printed in black on a dark ground. A fine, innovative setting for an old standby.
