Are they bogus? Are they extraterrestrial? Neither, according to Vallee, a French scientist who's part of the ""invisible college"" which is persevering in UFO research despite the massive ""coverup"" by the Air Force, French counterintelligence and other security agencies. Vallee is seeking nothing less than the ""morphology"" of flying saucers which leads to such astounding topics as ""the physics of the B.V.M.""--the Blessed Virgin Mary. Not to mention Joseph Smith's visions in the desert and the saintly apparitions of Fatima and Lourdes--the difference between a UFO and a Church-certified miracle is in the mind of the beholder. Vallee argues ingeniously that the patent ""absurdity"" of UFO accounts is evidence of their momentous significance; we need only apply ""meta-logic."" As a symptom of things to come Vallee cites one Allan the Messiah, of California: wearing an impeccable red uniform, he preaches the Everlasting Gospel ""revealed to him by the saucers."" Onward galactic soldiers; move over, Pope Paul.
