KIRKUS REVIEW

Originally presented under the auspices of the Lowell Institute in Boston, in January, 1956, as a series of 8 lectures, this book concentrates on particular works of 8 artists -- Pisanello,Leonardo,Raphael,Durer,Rembrandt,Watteau,Degas, and Picasso -- who have been chosen as representatives of the ""highest achievements in European draughtsmanship"" from the 15th to the 20th centuries. The 308 illustrations are beautifully reproduced, and each has been carefully chosen to illuminate a particular point in the text (as the slides were used to illustrate the original lectures) by the author, who is an expert in the field of ""Master Drawing"" and is currently a Professor of Fine Arts and Curator of Prints at the Fogg Art Museum of Harvard University. Most enjoyable for the selection of drawings included, this is a valuable addition to the home or public art library.
