Edited by two professors at the University of Hawaii, this collection consists of 57 selections pivoting about the 50th state. Arranged chronologically, the text begins with an account of the discovery of the islands by Captain Cook. Mark Twain, Stevenson, Maugham (and with the moderns-James Jones) are among the more prominent writers whose works are represented here and the anthology ends with five translations of ancient Hawaiian sources. Varied, exciting, and educational throughout.
