Marriage- its pitfalls, the necessity of making a mature choice- has been the subject of many books for young people and adults. In this text, James Peterson stresses the pre-marital period as an interval of great moment. He cautions the young person not to be motivated by purely romantic or sexual enthusiasm. He defines the various types of love which exist and indicates which makes for a pleasant experience and which for an enduring marriage. Status, economics, adjustment, sex, and counseling are all touched upon in this text which, though it says nothing particularly new, affirms its moderate and mature thesis with conviction and clarity. A sobering experience at a time when marriage is approached with the casualness of a prolonged weekend party.
