Vivid writing, in a story of a bombing mission that went awry, and of the pilot that determined to take the target even if it meant virtually a solo attack on Hamburg- a plane that was flak bait. It is a story of team play, recorded by the navigator who lives intensely in the moment- and then lapses into virtual unconsciousness, with flashbacks to successive episodes mirroring the moments of intense living in England on leave,- dice games, hot spots, dance halls, pubs, joints, and the places girls took him for money- for excitement- for love. The story-past and present-grooves into a sweeping panorama, and the present, -two engines lost, wrecked elevators, open bomb bay doors, successive deaths, shortage of gas- and the final incredible landing just short of shore, and the escape of three men to life- and memories. Not pleasant reading for the tender-skinned, but authentic, alive.
