The hit and run manoeuvers of Jesse Barker, newspaperman abroad, as he gets involved in a rare picture operation, agrees to smuggle a Vermeer out to Mexico. There, when his first contact is killed, the pictures disappear, and he is beaten up, knocked out, Barker realizes he's just an amateur in a pretty big league, stays with it to the finish in which six others die...
