Amass Delano, American captain, portrayed in a conversational delineation of his life, his voyages, his contributions -- a man outstanding for his times. Connolly dwells particularly on his achievements as a trader, for his natural curiosity led to his correcting of charts, navigation, noting port laws, trading conditions, discovery and exploration; he introduced innoculation; he noted details of land flora and fauna, of weather, and so on. A competent shipmaster himself, he had no use for incompetents he was generous in his praise of foreign people and their customs; he learned all he could of savage tribes, of the slave trade, of Sultans, of convicts. All in all quite a boy, this stalwart seaman, whose story should appeal to those who enjoy anything to do with the days of American sail.
