KIRKUS REVIEW

The sketches of the life and work of a number of English and Irish saints which comprise this volume will be of more interest to the student of English Catholicism than to the general reader. These are brief life stories of thirteen saints some of whom such as Anselm, Boniface, Thomas a Booket are well known. The majority however, are little known save to the specialized student. Men like Aelred, Colman, Godric, John Fisher, and Corby were nevertheless significant figures. Some of them date from the early history of England, most however, from the later and stormier period when to be a Catholic priest was to court the gallows. Some of these saints died for their faith in the time of Henry VIII.
