Rather saltless account of an old salt, Robert Forbes, one of the foremost figures in the China Trade. Off to sea at 13, thi mate at 16, Captain at 19, Forbes had an early and thorough apprenticeship at sea and in Canton. A life of long chances, heavy gambles, high profits; his part in the opium trade and war; various steamship experiences back in the U.S.; an expedition to relieve famine in Ireland -- finally retirement. What might have been a glamorous and revealing picture, emerges as a fairly unaccented life. Limited in appeal.
