CAP'N EZRA, PRIVATEER

The author of Skinny has written a book that is better in substance and setting, but less good from the point of view of characterization. The New Hampshire country lads who get into hot water on a visit to Boston, and who duck trouble by going to Newburyport and enlisting as shipbuilders and later as hands on a privateer, have a good build up but never become more than cardboard figures. The study of the period and the War of 1812 from the deck of a privateer, makes good reading and there is inadequate material on this period, so the book will make a place for itself.
