This has parts that are so fine that it may seem captious to take exception to other parts. And yet one cannot help but feel that the author gets too lyrical, too philosophical, at times, for his junior market. And that his story loses pace and pattern because of these periods when he inserts poems in prose on the subject of the expanding frontiers, and so forth. There is a rhythm to the story itself that needs no elaboration. Boone emerges as a life sized figure, with some of the legends intact, but some shattered. Some years ago Daugherty illustrated the Stewart Edward White Daniel Boone, now available in the Garden City series. Apparently the germ was planted then, and this is the result.
