WHAT EUROPE THINKS OF AMERICA

The author of Containment or Liberation has brought together frank appraisals of American-European relations by ten Europeans friendly to America all of whom, while at variance on other issues, feel that the United States must lead the free world and must accept her position as world leader. Among the topics discussed are the reasons for misunderstandings between America and Europe; the reaction of Europe to a liberation which through Yalta exposed them to Russia; views on the Marshall Plan; America as a dominant economy; America as Anti-Colonial; moral and political America; the aspects of resistance to Communism in free and satellite Europe. The general tone of the thoughts seems to center in an acceptance of American power supremacy in the free world but uncertainty as to America's policies, still uncharted, as to the support they can expect from her, as to what she will demand in return. The ten European contributors represent Italy, France, England, Poland, the Ukraine, Germany, Scandinavia, French North African Morocco, and vary in background from painter Joseph Czapski to biographer and Parliament member Julian Amery. A stiff does of truth tonic, administered with a firm and friendly hand, for which we should be thankful.
