IT HAPPENED LAST YEAR

The Smithsonian Center for Short-Lived Phenomena (with an assist from 1600 scientists all around the world) records, monitors, attends -- if possible -- and attempts to assess these signal events -- whether a mouse plague or a fireball in the sky. This is the annual record of what (mis)happened in 1973 with mostly brief paragraph coverage giving the sites, vital or rather non-vital statistics of many eruptions, oilspills, and also fish and bird kills, with more occasional episodes -- say a beached whale. Longer (a few pages) attention is paid to a major Icelandic volcano and to the discovery in the Philippines of the Tasaday tribe which has remained through the centuries untouched as well as unknown to the civilized world. An appendix completes.
