KIRKUS REVIEW

Film director James Ivory's ""response in print"" to the opulent splendors of India's sybaritic Maharajas. The photographs by John Swope and various 19th century recorders of the bejeweled native princes will dazzle and appall Westerners. The book also includes the script of a TV screenplay by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala who collaborated with Ivory on the movie Shakespeare Wallah, perhaps the best cinematic portrayal of Indian life ever seen.
