Straight-arm shenanigans in an exotic setting--the Great Barrier Reef--with time out for instruction in scuba diving, in outwaiting a hammerhead shark, in living like the aborigines on a waterless island. All this because two desperadoes, on the trail of gold and diamonds on a sunken World War II sub, commandeer the lugger taking Sandy Morgan and his father, crewmen Captain Steve and aborigine Johnny, on a coral-hunting expedition; the two are after a new underwater detection device that the Captain is testing and they get it, but the fifteen-year-olds, Sandy and Johnny, beat them to the treasure, and with an assist from an aroused octopus and the one-armed Captain, finish them off with a splash. Though Sandy's telling is adult-erated occasionally he does close in knowledgeably on the coral and crustaceans. Kids will slide past the story into the water.
