OPERATION ABC

Another problem novel by the author of Girl Prouble takes a football hero through senior year at San Miguel high school in Southern California and plumbs the depths of the serious reading problem he has. Summers' jaunty narrative style, familiar to his fans, makes Tom Roerdan's story all the more appealing as it cuts its wide swathe of school life. It all starts with the arrival of Joan Hewitt, the most beautiful girl Tom's friends, at least, have ever seen. When Joan and Tom meet it is in English III, a class which Tom dropped last year because he disliked the teacher Mr. Belt. Now forced to face it again before he graduates, Tom finds the battle with words far tougher than playing football. But Joan helps. Her father is a doctor and she is able to understand as well as fall in love, and to help him realize just what his own learning capabilities are. Broadening.
