KIRKUS REVIEW

Sociological but non-technical, this in one of the better books on a singl Latin-American country. A Yale professor gifted with a civilized mind, has produced a field, stimulating interpretation of the effect of race on the development of the Black republic. Although the emphasis is on the functioning of social institutions, there are benetrating comments on the American Marine occupation, the political set-up and history, as well as the caste system and Catholicism vs Vodoo. The author is sympathetic and realistic and the book is vital enough to arouse interest in Halti.
