This is a companion volume to the earlier Art of Painting From Prchistory Through The Renaissance (1964) and again the aesthetic and technical principles of not only painters, but influential thinkers, have been extracted and assembled. This particular period witnessed the classical dogma of the 17th century, the 18th, and finally the liberation of the 19th as ""instantaneous impression,"" and of course light and color, revolutionized modern painting. More than a hundred painters (Rubens, Poussin, David, Corot, Monet, Renoir, etc. etc.) and men of letters (Fenelon, Diderot, Hugel, Balzac, etc., etc.) are represented in the selections which vary from individual view on composition, proportion, perspective to more general tnets--truth, expression, inspiration.
